Slow Burner Emeralds Power to the End.

2nd November 2024

It was a cold murky November day in Dunmore as Glenmore faced down The Emeralds in the Kilkenny (Roinn C) Shield Final. Glenmore seemed the stronger team from the outset but they failed to capitalise on their dominance in the opening five minutes; the score remaining nil all for the first 5 minutes. Glenmore eventually began to land scores and had scored 1-02 before The Emeralds had even put anything on the board, in what has become a signature opening from The Emeralds.

Emerald’s eventual opening score was a point from a free, taken by Darragh Hickey in midfield in the 10th minute. It was what the team needed to settle, this score being followed a minute later by another point from play by Darragh Hickey. That brought the score to 1-02 to 0-02.

Glenmore came back with another point in the 13th minute, but that would be their final score of the half.

Emerald’s then began to surge forward, seeming to have found their voice and their confidence on the pitch. A goal in the 15th minute by Daniel Tobin, half-forward, left Emeralds only trailing by a point, 1-03 to 1-02, with another point from Daniel a minute later levelling the game.

From there, two more points from Daniel Tobin and a point from Cillian Deegan put some distance between The Emeralds and Glenmore; score 1-06, 1-03.  A goal from Seán Wall in corner-forward in the 26th minute left the half time score at 2-06 to 1-03.

The second half began as the first half ended with The Emeralds exerting their dominance on the field. A volley of six scores from Jack Power, full-forward, Darragh Hickey and Daniel Tobin between the 4th and 11th minute was an indication of The Emerald’s dominance at this stage of the game. Glenmore continued to contest the game, scoring another point in the 12th minute, but just weren’t able to get themselves back into the game, the scoreline reading 2-12 to 1-04 at this stage.

Twenty minutes into the second half The Emeralds brought on Jack Lyng, Charlie Moriarty, Rónan O’Shea and Seán Tierney. The Emeralds continued to score with a further three scores added, including one from Jack Lyng. Glenmore scored a further 2 points and a goal to leave the final score 2-15 to 2-06.
